Social Issues

Every activity at ELC is related to social issues. Areas of concern are particularly related to matters of social responsibility, social conscience and social justice. The Centre arranges talks, seminars, workshops and discussions to raise awareness and inform. ELC is not an advocacy group, as such, but aims to help people obtain a good knowledge base as citizens on which to form their opinions. On issues of public interest, we seek to go beyond what the media may tell us. We respect all informed well-reasoned opinion from those of any political, social or spiritual persuasion.

Social Issues matters often lead us to make presentations cooperatively with other organisations.

Following our very successful Books and Writing events with SA Authors in 2009  we are encouraged to plan again for both an Autumn and Spring event this year.

On Friday 19 March at 7.30,  Dr Basil Hetzel will speak about his book Chance and Commitment.  Dr Basil Hetzel’s work as a research scientist and public health advocate has prevented and will prevent millions worldwide from being born intellectually disabled. His engaging and reflective memoir traces the life behind his important research on iodine deficiency.

On Friday 16 April at 7.30, Dr Tony Rogers will discuss his book South Australia’s Extreme Weather: Its Human Impact. From tornadoes to cyclones, fires to floods, heat waves to snow storms and hailstones as big as golf balls, South Australia has definitely seen its share of extreme weather. Tony will show lots of pictures and tell some of the human interest stories from  his book. All profits from the sale of this book go to the Royal Society for the Blind and  it will be available on the night.

The format for these talks is similar to Poets’ Corner. The talks are given in an informal setting with drinks and nibbles, the author discusses his book for the first hour and, after supper, everyone has the opportunity to discuss the talk and any issues that may have arisen.

The Books and Writing Autumn Brochure will be out soon with a booking form.  Please ring the ELC to get a copy and pass it to interested friends.
An Interfaith meeting is working on dates for the Bread our Common Heritage events for 2010. Watch out for something planned for late May. This event is always popular,  so be ready to book as soon as details are announced.
